Trump admin proposes defunding suicide prevention hotline for queer youth

In yet another attack on the LGBTQIA+ community, the Trump administration has proposed ceasing all funding for a suicide prevention hotline that specifically provides support to LGBTQIA+ youth.

According to The Trevor Project, a suicide prevention and crisis intervention organisation for queer young people, a leaked budget draft has revealed that the US Government has proposed that funding be stopped for the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline’s LGBTQ+ Youth Specialised Services from 1st October 2025. The service is responsible for providing emergency crisis support to LGBTQIA+ youth who are considering suicide and, since being implemented in 2022, has provided more than 1.2 million crisis contacts with life-saving, LGBTQIA+-inclusive crisis services.

The Trevor Project estimates that more than 1.8 million queer young people in the United States seriously consider suicide each year and at least one attempts suicide every 45 seconds. While The Trevor Project is one of the organisations that make up the 988 LGBTQ+ Youth Subnetwork and will therefor be impacted by any funding freeze, it’s CEO Jaymes Black says that The Trevor Project will continue to provide 24 hour support to LGBTQIA+ young people.
