Poll shows Americans are increasingly rejecting Trump’s anti-trans agenda
US President Donald Trump’s obsession with rolling back transgender rights and protections is reportedly starting to dent his popularity. While numerous recent polls show that overall support for Trump has taken a battering, including a Pew poll that found nearly 59% of respondents now disapprove of the president’s job performance, a poll conducted by the independent non-profit news organisation The 19th specifically found that 49% of Americans believe that he should not be interfering in transgender issues at all. This was up from 43% prior to last November’s presidential election.
The poll also found that 59% of Americans support the rights of transgender adults to access gender-affirming care, but only 43% support the right of trans youth to seek such care. However, 55% opposed laws that would restrict gender-affirming care for minors, with a majority of Americans expressing a lack of confidence in politicians being informed enough about gender-affirming care for minors to make fair policy. Notably, 41% of Republicans opposed restrictions on gender-affirming care for minors.
Since coming into office, the Trump administration has attempted to restrict access to accurate passports, erase the accomplishments of trans elders, remove transgender members from the military and purge the government of what Trump terms as “woke gender ideology”.
